Test 1

This simple test is about the spider with the hand. I used stop motion to made the spider drop down along the thread of a spider web, and then hand touch the spider.
I will do more test about the insects how these insects interact with the hand, and make fun.

Character Design 3

I want the spider have long legs, small body and small eyes. Black color is good choose for it. I will focus on its legs movement.

The ladybird i think it could more delicate. It would climb the hand, along the fingers. It should black and red colors.

The grasshopper could more energetic. I design it of green color and powerful back legs.

The butterfly should very colourful, i will make beautiful color for its wings.

Adorable and entertaining live action animated insect films

Minuscule is a series of five minute short films first created by two French filmmakers, Thomas Szabo and Helene Giraud, in 2006. Each short features a mix of live action with animated bugs in compelling little stories. They transport you to another world that magically seems like it coexists with our own.

Mind Mapping for selecting characters

WHAT IF--How can the drawing of insects with the hand?

How can the drawing of insects interact with the hand?

The ideas so far...
Spider--1. spider could walk over the hand (or onto the hand), It could make the nice shadow of its legs.
2. Make a web to trap the hand or wind around the hand
3. Spider drop down along the thread of a spider web, hands play its long legs that put it up and put it down again and again. Spider want to bite hand, so hand bit it and try to catch it.

Butterfly--1. Firstly, it could a chrysalis, hand want to make it broken, suddenly, lots of butterflies are fly out, one stop on the top of the finger, or these butterflies could follow the finger movement on the paper.
2. When finger leave the paper, these butterflies still follow the finger. In the end, when hand make 3 claps, these butterflies fly away the hand.

Grasshopper--1. Hand catch it , but it always jump, and jump onto the hand, hand catch it again, it jump to another hand.
2. To hit the table to scare it.
3. To shake the paper left and right, up and down, let it move follow the paper.
4. It jump on the paper side, and turn over the paper, then it jump another page again and again to disappear.

Ladybird--1. Let it along palm or finger or back of hand to walk. It could walk from left hand to right hand.
2. To blow it, it will rolling to far from the front, then come back slowly.
3. Make the paper vertical. It could still climb from the bottom to the top of the paper.

New animatic

This animatic is about the relationship between hands and characters. The characters are including spider, ladybird, butterfly, and grasshopper. I think every insect has its own feature, so i designed the action follow their features. For example, the spider could make a web to trap the hand.

"Manipulation" By Daniel Greaves 1991
Good and useful example for my project.
The relationship between character and hand is quite interesting and sense of rhythm. There is a good relationship for every action between them.

Gertie the Dinosaur (Winsor McCay, 1914)
Gertie the Dinosaur is a 1914 short animated film by Winsor McCay. Although not the first animated film, it was the first cartoon to feature a character with an appealing personality.

Birmingham Nature Centre

Spiders are air-breathing chelicerate arthropods that have two body segments, eight legs, and no chewing mouth parts.

Non-predatory feeding

Although spiders are generally regarded as predatory, the jumping spider Bagheera kiplingi gets over 90% of its food from fairly solid plant material produced by acacias as part of a mutually beneficial relationship with a species of ant.

Methods of capturing prey
Main article: Spider web

The best-known method of prey capture is by means of sticky webs. Varying placement of webs allows different species of spider to trap different insects in the same area, for example flat horizontal webs trap insects that fly up from vegetation underneath while flat vertical webs trap insects in horizontal flight. Web-building spiders have poor vision, but are extremely sensitive to vibrations.

Defense

There is strong evidence that spiders' coloration is camouflage that helps them to evade their major predators, birds and parasitic wasps, both of which have good color vision. Many spider species are colored so as to merge with their most common backgrounds, and some have disruptive coloration, stripes and blotches that break up their outlines.

The Creation of a Character for D&AD
This example is a good example for my project. It's through live action and stop motion to making it simple.
I think my project probably similar with this example, I'd like to more interesting interaction between live actor and animation character.

Research for character 2

This is a Mata Atlantic's protection advertisement.
The characters are just the shape like paper cutting, no any details, quite simple and clear.
The color is just black and white, people can focus on the content.

Research for character

These are the facial expressions that when you use MSN or other chat tools to talking with your friends, you will use some facial expressions to make your talking funny.
These facial expressions are come from: http://qqface.knowsky.com/

These are the facial expressions, it's quite similar with my character.
I probably just add his legs, it could be a cartoon spider.
I want to keep my character simple and clear.

Character Design

The character i think it should be very casual and simple, so i created this spider similar a black ball. And i will focus on the black and white color for it.

StoryBoard

The story is happened between live actor and animated character.
The live actor is one guy's hand.
The animated character is a spider.
A guy open his sketch book that want to drawing something. He draw a cartoon spider very casual, but he doesn't want it immediately. However, he can not remove the spider. The spider begin to moving.
So he draw a cage, an insecticide, a hole and a cooker which to leave it away.
Finally, these ways are useless for the spider. He just only closed the sketch book.
In fact, this spider didn't disappear and ready to coming out.

Research for style

It's combine with animation and live action, quite simple style and very funny. The animated character is just two hand drawing guys.

Live-action/animated film

A live-action/animated film is a motion picture that features a combination of real actors or elements: live-action and animated elements, typically interacting.
Techniques:
Originally, animation was combined with live action in several ways, sometimes as simply as double-printing two negatives onto the same release print. More sophisticated techniques used optical printers or aerial image animation cameras, which enabled more exact positioning, and better interaction of actors and animated characters. Often, every frame of the live action film was traced by rotoscoping, so that the animator could add his drawing in the exact position.

Updated Aim

Aim:
I would like to produce a short story through animation and live action without language.
I will express the relationship between live actor and animated character, focus on animation style.
The part of animation, i prefer doing simple stop motion style.
The part of live action, the actor is probably people's hands.
The whole story is exaggerated and funny that tells audience.

Theme:
I would like to create a piece of work about the relationship between live actor and animated character.

Learning Outcomes:
  • To research some animation works with live action
  • To experiment some piece of drawing way for animation
  • To improve my After Effects and Final Cut Pro skills
  • To improve the cinematography understanding and film scene skills
  • To learn character action skills
  • To draw a lots of character movement in order to help me understand structure and the way character move
